 My wonderful sister-in-law and her equally wonderful daughter sliding across the glassy surface. It was a very calm day on the river. That is until we got there. :-) Now for the Harper Lee connection. Julie's college roommate and very close friend Dani is the daughter of Montgomery/Selma Alabama area reporter Alvin Benn. Mr. Benn wrote a book about his life's work and his days covering the civil rights movement from what was essentially its center. The book is called "Reporter: Covering Civil Rights...And Wrongs in Dixie". Julie was given an autographed copy of the book a couple of years ago and the first thing I noticed was the blurb on the front cover. I knew he had seen a lot in is life but there was something about that quote that brought it home. "After a long career of responsible and, at times, courageous reporting, Al Benn brings his probity to his vivid memoirs. He gives journalism a good name." Harper Lee Harper Lee. Seriously. The Harper Lee. Now that's an endorsement that carries some weight. Civil Rights reporter and the Pulitzer Prize winning author of "To Kill a Mockingbird". Serious stuff and I was impressed. Now let's get silly. So that's three degrees of separation from me to Harper Lee. Very cool. But could there be more? Could there be another connection even bigger than a Pulitzer Prize winning novelist? Do you smell bacon? In the film "To Kill a Mockingbird", the part of the prosecutor was played by one William Windom. Mr. Windom was in the 1988 movie 'She's Having a Baby' with the one and only Kevin Bacon. That's five degrees of separation from me to Kevin Bacon. Awesome!!!:::))) I know. Tenuous connection at best but I still like it. Tomorrow I'll give you an even closer connection between me and the Kev. Only 3 degrees of separation. Hope you're having a great week.
