![]() Part of the magic of New Orleans. Music around every corner. This is at the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park just down the way from Cafe du Monde. Has to be the worlds smallest and possibly coolest National Park. The shows are free and in a small, somewhat strange room with folding chairs and standing room. Last time we were in town, we saw Delfeayo Marsalis, the trombone playing Marsalis brother, and his band on stage. (I sat front row at a Branford Marsalis Quartet concert here in Pensacola a couple of years back but that's another story.) This time, there was a kids concert going on. This guy is probably 11 or 12 years old. Maybe he's the next Wynton. When I was in my 20's, I spent some time trying to be "cool". Of course, nothing kills cool faster than trying to be cool so it really didn't work out. But I still tried. My plan included trying to develop a taste for cigars, scotch and jazz. The trappings of what I saw as the smoky jazz club, ultra cool crowd. The cigars didn't stick. Never did enjoy them but I looked damn good smoking them. I still enjoy scotch but it has to be good scotch so I can't afford to get carried away to the point where they carry me away. The jazz is a little more complicated. First, "jazz" is a very big word with tons of very different styles under one umbrella. Some I like. Some not so much. Second, I love watching live shows because the visual is almost as important as the sound for me. It works together somehow. But the thing is, I hardly ever make an effort just to listen to jazz in my everyday life with a couple of very notable exceptions. Today's favorite album I discovered during my attempt at cool and I still listen to it all the time. Another great one to edit to. B's Favorite Album's 5: "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis.
