 More from Downtown Pensacola. On the first post in this series, I mentioned there was a moment of inspiration. Something I recognized as we walked down the street. 'Early Sunday Morning' is one of my favorite Edward Hopper paintings and this image may be as close as I get, at least compositionally, to that painting. But of course it's not just the composition that draws me to that painting. The light, the color, the texture and the character of the building is something I can shoot for even if the layout is somewhat different. It's not a perfect analogy but the way I think of it is, in the past I've tried to shoot downtown as a landscape and what I want to do here is to shoot the buildings as portraits. Using the light and natural texture to bring out the character of the place. I'm not thrilled with the light on this image so I'll probably go back and try to bring a little more life out of it at some point but I liked it enough to post so I could talk about the series. The main drag down Palafox runs north/south so the early morning and late evening light puts the street in shadow. I lucked out with Guava, which is on the same side of the street as this shot. I shot it first in the same flat light and then started walking around, shooting other buildings. When I made my way back up the street later, the light was reflecting off the building across the street and hitting Guava, lighting it up. You can see the arch shapes on the lower level. I love the light there. I guess I need to see what's on some of the east/west side streets that could be interesting and has the long, sweet light. Seville Quarter could be cool. (That's The Independent News downstairs and those are Mardi Gras beads on the awning.)
