The President's Visit

President Bush came to Pensacola for a rally yesterday so I took the girls down to see the show. His brother, Florida's Governor Jeb Bush, introduced him after various other state and local politicians took turns at the podium. The band played. The crowd cheered. It was one big party.

But this post is not about the specifics of the politics for me. This is about having an experience. There are plenty of other blogs that are all about left vs right so I don't think this is the place for that kind of debate. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty cynical about the whole process and that has produced an apathy in me about politics that I'm somewhat ashamed of. Which brings me back to the real reason for going.

The big picture for me was giving my girls the chance to see the President of the United States in person. The chance doesn't come up very often. I may have doubts about my influence on the political process but there's no doubt about my influence with my daughters. If I can expose them to the world and let them know there's nothing they can't do, I'll be happy. Right now, anyone can become president as long as they're rich, white, and male. Maybe by the time my girls get to be my age, that will have changed. Maybe I won't be so cynical then.

(I had to take the girls out of school for the afternoon but both of their teachers thought it was worth it. J2's teacher asked her to write about what she saw for the class. Here's how my 9 year old daughter saw the day.)

----------------------------

'This is what happened when I went to see the President.

First we stood in a 20 minute line! When we finally got inside we had to go
through a metal detector and get scanned by policemen. After we got done we
came into a tremendous stadium filled with people. We found out there were
9,000 people there! It was exciting!

When we got our seats we looked around. I saw a band getting ready to play,
tons of reporters and photographers, and a huge stage that the President
would walk on. After a while lots of important people started talking, including
Holly Benson. People talked, the band played and I started to get bored. This
went on for two hours!

Finally the light dimmed and in walked the President!!! Everyone screamed
and yelled! Then I got excited again. He talked about who he wanted us to vote
for and he got people so excited that all of 9,000 people did the wave! It was
fun!

After the secret service men lead him away, confetti exploded everywhere! It
was a blast and I had a great experience! '

----------------------------

(I asked her afterward if she wanted to be president one day. She said no. She said there were too many other things she would rather do. That's part of the problem. The people smart enough to do the job are too smart to want the job. :)
