![]() Sunset behind “The Cross” on Pensacola Beach. St. Augustine Florida is known as “The Nation’s Oldest City.” It was founded in 1565 and has been going ever since. But Pensacola almost held the title of oldest city. A few years before St Augustine, Don Tristan de Luna started a colony in Pensacola but the settlement got wiped out a few years later by a hurricane. Pensacola wasn’t settled again for quite a while. This cross on top of a tall dune at the beach commemorates the first settlement. It’s a little ironic that this cross was one of the only things on the beach not wiped out or damaged by hurricane Ivan.
